I know you’re looking at the title and thinking “what the hell does this have to do with sneakers? This is a sneaker website, why is there an article that has nothing to do with shoes?”
Fair question. All the noise surrounding Bar Louie and their recent additions to their dress code policy has nothing to do with sneakers. If you’ve been living under a rock for the past few days, you can catch up on the story here.
I chose to write about this because we’re a locally focused website, and Bar Louie is in an area of town that I would think most of our readers frequent. I think it ties into everyday life in the cities, and although it doesn’t have jack shit to do with sneakers, I’d like to touch on it anyway.
When I first saw the story, I didn’t know what to think. I was taken aback at first, but after going through the details more thoroughly, I’ve came to a few conclusions.
I think it’s outrageous that people are trying to pull out the race card on this one. There are people of all colors, shapes and sizes who wear baggy pants, chains, flat brim hats and sports jerseys. Shit, that was my uniform in middle school. I’d almost say it’s more “racist” that people jump to conclusions (mainly that Bar Louie is trying to ban black people, that seems to be what folks think this dress code is all about) than the actual code itself is.
In my view it’s pretty simple: they feel that their clientele is a certain type of person and they don’t want any riff raff in their establishment. There’s no boundaries for riff raff. Riff raff can be black, white, hispanic, or purple with green polka dots. They’re a private business, and have every right to hold patrons that enter their establishment to a certain standard of dress. It’s not a hard dress code to make. Throw on some jeans and a shirt and you can get in for god’s sake.
Sadly, all these hyper-progressive types want to make a big deal out of nothing (I’m a pretty liberal person myself, and I still find it crazy). It’s sad how many folks are so quick to scream about social injustice when they’re pretty short on actual facts or even any valid opinions at all. The lady in the video even had the nerve to bring up the Jim Crow laws. Get out of here It’s offensive that she’d even consider bringing up laws fueled by hate and comparing them to a somewhat normal dress code . Hope she enjoyed her fifteen minutes with the idiots over at Fox News while they lasted.
With all that being said, I don’t much care for Bar Louie anyway. It’s overpriced and I’m not a fan of the vibe there..it feels kind of fake to me. If you see me out in Uptown, it’s much more likely that I’ll be on the Uptown Tavern rooftop having myself a cold and reasonably-priced beer.
