Give The Dunk Contest A Rest

The NBA Slam Dunk Contest is trash. It’s been trash for the better part of the last decade … and it really isn’t even worth watching anymore.

Yeah, we said it. And we’re not just saying it for shock value either … we mean it. It sucks. But before you slam your laptop shut or throw your phone in disgust, hear us out. The dunk contest isn’t what it used to be, and the NBA needs to give it a rest.

For a long while, the dunk contest was the best part of NBA All-Star Weekend (even more so than the actual game). Dr. J dunked from the free throw line. MJ and Dominique dueled. Vince Carter shook the rafters. So did Jason Richardson.

But it just got stale after a while. The rules were constantly changed. The best players in the league didn’t participate anymore (you can’t sit here and tell us you’re not disappointed that LeBron James was never in a dunk contest). The best dunkers in the world no longer resided in the NBA (check this video out if you don’t believe that statement). And the contest seems to be more about who can come up with the most creative props than who can do the best dunks, which is a huge problem. Sure, showmanship has always been a part of dunking … but when the dunk is more about the fanfare than the actual act, then it’s not even worth watching.

So here’s a radical idea: the NBA needs to shelve the dunk contest for a few years. Put it on the backburner. Let excitement build again. Recruit the best players to participate. Don’t force an over-produced event that’s more about production values than dunks down our throats year after year … and then the dunk contest just might return to its former glory.
