Hey Twin Cities: Why No Love For Adidas?

I’ve seen a lot of things and met a lot of people, both cool and not so cool around the Minnesota sneaker community. I know people who love Foams, people who love Jordans and people who love New Balance. However, there seems to be one brand that receives a glaring lack of attention. And no, it’s not some weird small niche brand like you might think it is.

It’s Adidas. Yeah, that Adidas. The second largest sneaker company in the world. You might have heard of them once or twice. But for how big and influential they are in the sneaker industry, they don’t seem to get a whole lot of love here in our local sneaker community. Why is that, you might ask? Well, I’ve got a few thoughts:

The first reason may be that nowhere in Minnesota has a top-tier Adidas account. I know I wrote a piece earlier stating that people should stop complaining about things we don’t have here that other cities like Chicago, New York, and LA might, but that is one thing we’re lacking. Shops at the mall will get the occasional ZX Flux or Crazy 8 (and there are two outlet stores, but neither of them really get anything that’s nuts either), but there’s really nowhere that gets the super-limited releases.

The second reason ties in very closely with the first one. Since there’s nowhere here that gets these crazy Adidas releases, some folks locally who don’t do too much sneaker shopping online haven’t really been exposed to them. It’s hard to get behind something dope if there’s nowhere that’s going to have it.

And last but certainly not least, it may just be that some people are just plain stubborn. A lot of people are so set in their Nike and Jordan only ways that they won’t try something new even if they may think it’s pretty cool.

With Kanye West and Pharrell signing contracts with Adidas and their continued partnership with Yohji Yamamoto (does that man make some sick shoes or what? Y-3 Boosts for the win!), hopefully Adidas will establish a stronger foothold in Minnesota…and maybe we’ll even see a top-notch account in the near future. More sneaker choices are always good.
