As much as we all hate it, reselling is part of the sneaker game. People who are out to make a quick buck will cop limited kicks and flip them for well over the box price. As long as there’s more demand than supply for sneakers, there will always be resellers and there’s really not a whole hell of a lot we can do about that.
As someone who doesn’t care for paying over box price for kicks (I’ve never spent more than $50 over retail), I often find myself wondering about a few things: Who actually pays resell prices? Do people who pay resell prices feel bad about it? Would there ever be a sneaker that I wanted badly enough to pay resell prices?
Although I could never imagine wanting to possess something material badly enough that I’d pay several times its face value to have whatever it might be in my possession, I do have friends who have considered paying (and who have paid) resell prices.
The most recent instance would be a friend of mine who badly wants a pair of Turtledove Yeezy 350 Boosts. He was unable to get them on release day, and although he’s been making a valiant effort to find a pair for a fair price or flat-out trade for a pair (he’s got a lot of heat to trade), he’s been absolutely, positively unable to find anything. Owing to this, he’s decided as soon as funds allow, he’s going to go ahead, bite the bullet, and pay the resale price.
Thankfully I’ve never had to do that (I actually got a pair of Turtledoves on release day too..flex), but as someone who really loves certain rare sneakers in my collection, I can understand where you would get to feeling like you needed something and would do just about anything to get it. That’s where resellers come in. They’ll prey on your desires and squeeze every last dollar they can out of you…and there’s nothing at all you can do about it sometimes.
I want to open the floor: What do you think about paying resell prices? Have you ever wanted something badly enough that you’ve been willing to pay well over box price for it? If so, what was the shoe and why did you want it so badly? Drop a comment below or let us know on Twitter! We love getting discussions going.
