Desiigner’s “New English” … No Thanks.

Here at KicksOneTwo, we’re Desiigner fans. We rock with his energy, enthusiasm, and crazy on-stage dances, so we were excited to hear what he’d bring to the table with his recent “New English” mixtape. Now that some time has passed and we’ve been able to listen to the tape a few times, we’ve been able to form an opinion … and that opinion is that the tape is not good at all.

It’s chaotic and disjointed. Several songs are incredibly short (one’s 38 seconds and another is 24 seconds, which isn’t even really enough to be a song). and on others he sounds so much like Future you really can’t tell the difference.

Several of the tracks also sound unfinished, like they were just rushed on to the tape to fill space up. There’s a few solid tracks mixed in among the garbage (Zombie Walk, Jet, and Da Day are all passible), but Panda, which we’ve already all heard a million times is by far the best track on there.

Rushing out a tape was a bad look for Desiigner. He’s got the Kanye co-sign. He’s got the G.O.O.D. Music backing. He’s got a hit single (if you say you don’t love Panda then you’re lying to yourself), and a place on the XXL Freshman list, plus his Freshman freestyle that’s making waves on the Internet as well. He had an opportunity to lay back, let his buzz continue, and drop a tape that was polished and professional, instead of a muddled mess like New English.

We’re still rooting for Desiigner, and we still believe that the potential is there for him to have a great career, but this tape is a no-go, and if unfinished bricks like this tape become the norm for him, we have a feeling that he won’t be around too much longer.
