Nobody in music is able to whip the Internet into a bigger frenzy than Drake, and he’s gone and done it again with his recent diss of Kid Cudi.

In case you weren’t up-to-date on the story, here’s the Cliff’s Notes version. Kid Cudi went on a Twitter tirade a few weeks back, with what many believed to be a jab at Drake included:

Drake responded to Cudi’s diss during a concert a few days later, and when he released 4 songs this last Sunday, there was a shot at Cudi included on “Two Birds, One Stone”, in which he said “You were the Man on the Moon, now you go through your phases / Life of the angry and famous”.

This is clearly referencing Cudi’s recent announcement that he was checking himself into rehab for suicidal thoughts and depression. Throughout his career, Cudi has made it publicly known that he’s struggled with mental health issues, and has been widely lauded for having the courage to speak out. Mental health issues are no joke, and must be treated very seriously.

So we’re going to go ahead and call Drake’s diss extremely lame. Sure, we understand that disses are a part of hip-hop. Pac told Biggie that he slept with his woman in graphic terms. Gucci told Jeezy to dig up his friend (that Gucci killed). Those are obviously both much more graphic than Drake’s diss.

However, that was a different level of shit-talking. Drake mocking Cudi’s depression is a ham-handed, lame attempt at throwing shots. It seems like something a highschooler would do, and is also somewhat of a crutch as it is neither creative nor clever. It’s just flat-out petty, which Drake is clearly very good at being. Plus, depression is not a “phrase”. It’s something that stays with you. You can repress it, but it never truly goes away.

It’s great to hear two rappers go at each other, and spit ferocious bars back and forth until there’s a winner. It’s not dope to take the easy way out and mock someone for the most obvious thing possible, and Drake is proving Cudi’s point. If he truly considers himself “top 5”, he should be able to come up with something better.

What do you think about Drake’s jabs at Kid Cudi? Do you think they’re justified, or do you agree with us when we say they’re lame?
