Nike’s Handling The PG 1 Release The Right Way

We’ll come right out and say it: sneakerheads don’t really care about Nike Basketball anymore.

The hot streak they enjoyed when every LeBron, KD, and Kobe release was on point is long gone, and now the vast majority of their shoes sit on shelves, hit the sale rack, and then hit the outlets. It’s the nature of the game. Sneakerheads have a short attention span, and Nike Basketball lost that attention span several years ago due to a combination of over-saturation, poor design, and a shifting market.

However Paul George’s first signature shoe, the Nike PG 1 is looking to earn some of that sauce that Nike Basketball used to have back. They’re limited. They’re rich with the little details that sneakerheads love so much. They’re actually pretty damn clean too. The pair pictured above, the “Shining” colorway is limited to only 12,000 pairs, and will be releasing only through Nike’s very best accounts.

Plus, they even did a “Hickory High” PE colorway to match the Pacers’ exclusive alternate uniforms, which PG himself debuted last night.

Nike Basketball has a long way to go to regain the trust and admiration of the sneaker community again, but this release is a step in the right direction. If Nike can be sure to focus more on limited releases and making their product seem more high-end (instead of just expensive and extra-techy), they just might regain a big chunk of their lost glory. Let’s see if PG can help them do just that.
