If you’re like me, “getting out” of the sneaker game has crossed your mind once or twice. Maybe it’s your frustration with price increases that make an already expensive hobby almost impossible to afford. Maybe it’s missing out on a shoe due to bots. Maybe it’s a reseller charging outrageous prices for a sneaker that just came out.
All of the annoyances listed above are very frustrating, and valid reasons to question why you do this. However, I thought it might be enjoyable to delve a little bit deeper, and see when you might really want to stop collecting, as opposed to when you’re just frustrated with an aspect of the game.
I’d say there’s two valid reasons to stop collecting: either you just don’t have the passion for it anymore, or you simply can’t afford it. If you can’t afford it (there’s no shame in that, it’s a very expensive hobby!), it’s pretty straightforwards. You’ve just gotta back out because it’s messing with your funds. Sneakers are great, but if you can’t afford to eat or put gas in your car for a few days after a cop it might be time to consider a new hobby.
It’s not quite as straightforwards when you don’t have the passion for it anymore. It’s more of a gradual realization. You could be jaded about every new release. When you put a new pair on foot, you don’t get that same rush that you used to. When something crazy drops, you can’t bring yourself to care.
All of those are gradual signs that it might be time to get out of the game. It’s really a labor of love, and if you don’t love it anymore, it might be time to move on.
People always talk about getting out of the game, or not collecting anymore, and sometimes it’s for a valid reason. I though I’d put my thoughts on the whole situation into words for your enjoyment…and in case you were still wondering, even though I’m not at all stoked about potential price increases, I don’t plan on getting out of the game anytime soon. I love sneakers as much as I did 7 years ago when I started collecting, if not more.
