Jordan Brand has always done a great job telling stories with colorways of their shoes. They manage to find different ways to honor Michael Jordan’s accomplishments with almost every product they put out … and the “Shattered Backboard” shoes are no exception.
You probably heard the story when the first colorway dropped last year, but in the event you haven’t, we’ll run it by you again. During a Nike exhibition game in 1985 (can you imagine something like that happening today? Times have definitely changed), Michael Jordan broke a backboard with a furious dunk on a fast break. His team happened to be wearing orange jerseys … so that provided the initial inspiration for the shoe. Here’s the video below if you haven’t seen it.
The first shoes in the pack (the Jordan I with the black toe pictured above) were so successful that Jordan added two more backboard-shattering shoes in their holiday lineup this year. The new I features way less black and displays the white/orange way more prominently, while the XXXI features a black/orange upper with what appears to be a gum sole. One for style, one for performance. Jordan Brand is making sure you’re covered all around.
Both of the shoes are extremely clean, and with the wild popularity of the first Shattered Backboard I’s, it’s not unsafe to assume that these will blow off the shelves when they release October 6th. Do yourself a favor and grab a pair if the opportunity presents itself. You’ll be glad you did.
