Nike SF-AF1: What’s All The Hype About?

Military themes and colors have always played a large part in sneaker and clothing design … and that’s never been more evident than it is now. A few years ago it was camp, but now tonal, earthy colors like browns, beiges and greens have taken over the sneaker/street fashion world.

Kanye West has had great success with his tonal boots, and Nike’s military-inspired NikeLab releases have brought them much fanfare as well … so they’re amping up the military inspiration with their new SF-AF 1.

The SF-AF 1 is “loosely inspired by military workwear” according to Nike, and comes accompanied by a matching nylon duffle bag that features paracord handles that can be removed and attached to the shoe to change up the look. We’ve got to admit that that’s pretty cool and that the nylon, military-inspired look is nifty as well. But then another question comes to mind: what’s all the hype about?

These are a weird release, no doubt. If the military-inspired look wasn’t hitting so hard right now, most sneakerheads wouldn’t shake a stick at these. They are fairly ridiculous after all, as they look like an army boot with an Air Force 1 sole. Sure, the design is interesting like we mentioned above, but how wearable are these? Would you rock them with a camo uniform, grenades, and an M4 carbine?

It’s funny what hype does. A shoe that wouldn’t even be looked at twice a few years ago is now a must-cop. But hey, we can’t be mad at Nike. They saw an opportunity, and they capitalized on it.
