On the Materialism in Our Culture (And How To Avoid It)

Sneaker culture is a beautiful thing. It brings together all types of people from all different backgrounds who share a common love for shoes. This love transcends age, race, background..all of that., and that’s amazing. The inclusion and diversity of sneaker culture alone make it a worthwhile hobby.

However, like most good things, there’s a side of sneaker culture that’s not so great: its materialism. You’re collecting things. Objects. Sometimes you get in too deep, and when that happens you can drown yourself in these things and objects. It’s important to keep you head around you in the sneaker game and always remember what’s what.

Keep moderation in mind when you’re collecting. Believe us, we know how easy it is to go hog-wild and cop shoes left and right. There’s always something new dropping, and the people in marketing at sneaker companies know exactly how to get us hyped. But when you start doing that, you wind up with a giant stack of shoes you don’t really love and won’t really wear.

When you’ve been collecting long enough, you’ll develop a sense, and that sense will let you know when you’re starting to get too thirsty. Pay attention to that sense. If you feel yourself getting caught up in the hype too much and too frequently, take a step back and take a deep breath. You don’t “need” every new pair…you’re going to forget about most of them in a month anyway.

Figure out what shoes you really want and pursue those shoes. You’ll have a collection full of kicks you love and wear frequently, and that’s infinitely more rewarding than having huge stacks of kicks that you don’t really give a shit about. Enjoy the deluge of releases, but cop selectively. There’s no need to be breaking the bank on a new release every single weekend. It’s easier to start doing that then you may think.

So trust us when we say that using self-control and not getting too caught up in the hype is well worth it. Cop what you love, not just what you like. Your sneakerhead experience will be much more fun and rewarding that way.
